Mindful Giving

As the holidays approach, many are already doing their gift shopping, or have at least started making their lists. Many people are stressed by the mere thought of it...some because they just don't like shopping, and some because of the financial strain. Practicing mindful giving is a good way to avoid stress during the holidays (or any other time when a gift is called for).

Even though gift-giving may not be a financial strain for you, it may be for some of the people on your gift list. Unless they have specified something they would like or something they need, it may be best to gift them with cash they can spend as they please, a prepaid credit card, or a gift certificate, as opposed to something that may sit around the house or go unused. Maybe eating out isn't in their budget often, so a gift certficate to a nice meal out at a restaurant would be appreciated. Everyone eats, so food gifts are a good option, as long as you are familiar with any dietary restrictions of the recipient...you wouldn't want to gift gourmet chocolates to a diabetic or a bottle of wine to someone who avoids alcohol. If you're handy in the kitchen, homemade food gifts are nice, whether it's homemade sweets or soup you canned from the vegetables in your garden.

Elders usually don't need anything else to clutter up the household. Consider gifting them tickets to an event they would enjoy.

The gift of time is one of the best things you can give. If you're feeling the strain on your budget, consider giving the gift of time. An elder who is in a nursing home would surely appreciate an invitation, if they are able to get out and go. Invite them to join you for a home-cooked meal, or take them for a ride through town to look at the Christmas lights. If a friend or relative is a caregiver for a loved one, offer to relieve them for a few hours or a day so they can have some time to themselves.

What we don't want you to do is go into debt with your shopping. You don't want to be paying for this year's gifts when next Christmas rolls around. Buy local when you can. Support small businesses when you can. The big chain stores will survive without your money, but it would mean a lot to the small business owners in your town if you support them.

Of course, if you know someone who lives with chronic pain, we'd love for you to gift them with some CryoDerm. You could gift your favorite massage therapist one of our awesome TheraBlend massage products. Someone who works standing on their feet all day would like our Extreme Foot Cream. You'd be supporting our family-owned business and buying products that are made in America.

We wish you stress-free days in the upcoming holiday season.
